Dr. Irie has received the Research Career Development Award from the US National Institute of Health (NIH). She was the first woman scientist in UCLA to be awarded the NIH Career Development Award. She has been a member of NIH study sections on immunology and experimental therapeutics (1982-1988), and the American Cancer Society's advisory committee for immunology and immunotherapy (1982-1988). In 1991, Dr. Irie joined JWCI as senior vice president and research director. As the leader of the Institute's research program and the administrative operation she made a number of significant contributions in establishing and stabilizing the newly founded Institute. In addition, as the Director of the Division of Biotechology Science, Dr. Irie led a research program team for the development of therapeutic biological drugs for cancer. She was awarded six NIH grants serving at different times as Program Project Leader, Program Project Core Leader and RO-1 Principal Investigator. Since 1995, Dr. Irie concentrates her research efforts studying the clinical application of human monoclonal antibodies as well as the preclinical study of recombinant and synthetic tumor vaccines for the treatment of cancer.
