Jeff Hilebrandt (pictured above right) was recently presented with the Wrangler Award at the Western Heritage Awards Ceremony, on April 12, 2008 at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Hilebrandt was honored for a documentary he produced for Starz-Encore about the life of beloved movie legend John Wayne. The documentary highlighted the life of this legendary man, and prominently featured the John Wayne Cancer Institute. Below is Hilebrandt's inspiring acceptance "speech," a poetic tribute to John Wayne and the John Wayne Cancer Institute:
A COWBOY’S CAUSE
A Cowboy’s never taller
than when he’s on his knees.
A Cowboy’s never stronger
than when he asks God, please.
A Cowboy’s never braver
than when he sheds a tear
for all the little cowpokes
who won’t live another year.
John Wayne was our hero
cause he fought for those in need.
John Wayne is a symbol
cause he’d work till he’d succeed.
Like Duke, we will not waiver
when searching for the answer
to save today’s young cowpokes
from that dreaded big C- cancer.
And the John Wayne Cancer Institute
could use your helping hand
to conquer cancer’s rampage
all across our land.
So make a contribution.
Do whatever you can do
And then, step on up and join us
cause you’ll be a hero too.
